Bird Watching Hikes

Come see Hacienda Baru National Wildlife Refuge where more than 350+ bird species have been identified. This wonderful diversity is due to the variety of habitats found on the 330 hectare reserve which include: primary rainforest, secondary forest, swamp forest, mangrove forest, riverbank, wetlands, seashore, old cacao plantations and open pastures.

Some of our favourite bird hikes are:

Lowland Bird Watching Hike

This hike begins early when the birds are just becoming active. First is a visit to a tower, located on a hill at treetop level. This is an ideal location for spotting tanagers, honeycreepers, toucans, saltators, vireos and many more. From there you will hike through a secondary forest with your sharp-eyed guide until you arrive at La Casona, the old Hacienda Baru home, where you will enjoy a delicious breakfast of typical Costa Rican food.
After breakfast you will continue on to the river, your best chance to observe pelagic species. Petrels, jaegers, gulls, and others are likely to be found there. Later you will visit the rookery, secondary forest and the beach.
Duration: 5 – 6 hours
Times: Monday – Saturday at 5:30 AM (minimum of 2, maximum of 8 people)
What to wear: closed-toed comfortable hiking shoes, long trousers or shorts
What to bring: water, insect repellent, backpack, camera
