How to Get to Oxygen Jungle Villas in Uvita, Costa Rica

Scroll Down

Getting to Oxygen Jungle Villas means reaching Uvita, on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast, then a short climb up the mountain. From San Jose airport, drive the coast road (about 3.5 to 4 hours), take a 20-minute domestic flight to Quepos, or let us arrange a private transfer door to door. The final climb needs a 4×4.

Imagine the last stretch of a road trip down the Costa Rican coast. You’ve had the Pacific out your window for a while, then you turn inland and start to climb. And just as you reach us, the canopy opens and the whole ocean is suddenly there in front of you, glittering, with panoramic jungle and ocean views in every direction. This is the stretch of coast where the mountains meet the sea, and that short climb up the mountain is where it all opens up.

If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, and specifically to Oxygen Jungle Villas in Uvita, you’ll want to know how to get here.

So we’ve put together this guide to walk you through your options, whether you fly, drive yourself, or let us arrange a private transfer. Here’s how to reach Uvita, and the short hop up the mountain to Oxygen Jungle Villas.

How far is Oxygen Jungle Villas from the beach?

Guest relaxing with a drink on a private terrace overlooking the Pacific coastline at a boutique jungle hotel in Costa Rica, with a pool and lush tropical surroundings.

The first thing you notice as you reach Costa Rica’s southern zone is the wall of lush green mountains cascading down into the Pacific. And in our minds, it’s one of the most beautiful stretches of coast anywhere. Green mountains, glittering ocean, all at once.

Oxygen Jungle Villas sits up in those mountains above Uvita, on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, about 10 minutes by car from Uvita Beach. You drive a short but steep mountain road to reach us, so in just a few minutes you’re up among the panoramic views.

And the beach stays close. You can get to the beach in ten minutes whenever you want it, which is the rare thing here: high enough for the views, still close to the beach.

The final climb needs a 4×4, but it’s not a scary or daunting drive, and we can always arrange a private transfer so you don’t have to think about it at all.

How to get to Uvita from San Jose

Nearly everyone starts in San Jose, at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO). From there, you’ve got two easy ways to get from San Jose down to Uvita: drive the coast, or take a short domestic flight. Both are simpler than the forums make them sound, and the whole trip between San Jose and Uvita is easier than a lot of Costa Rica travel first-timers expect.

Drive from San Jose

Driving from San Jose airport is the classic way in. You’ll take Route 27 out to the coast, then head south on Route 34, the Costanera, the coastal highway that runs past the beach towns of Jaco, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio before it reaches Uvita. Plan on about 3.5 to 4 hours, a little more if you stop (and you should).

The main road is paved the whole way, well marked, and quiet by North American standards, so the drive takes about 3.5 hours of easy going rather than a long drive that wears you out. We’d recommend driving earlier in the day, so you arrive with plenty of daylight and stay ahead of any afternoon rain.

If you land late, spend the night near San Jose and set off fresh the next morning; the early start is well worth the trip.

Costa Rica’s dry season runs December to April, when the road is at its easiest, and the greener months bring short, heavy afternoon showers that pass quickly.

If you’re renting a car in Costa Rica, any airport car rental desk can set you up, and we’d book a 4×4 (a 4 wheel drive, sometimes written 4WD), which you’ll want for the final climb up to us.

Fly most of the way

If you’d rather trade the drive for a flight, it’s quick and easy. A short domestic flight from San Jose to Quepos, near Manuel Antonio and about an hour from Uvita, takes only about 20 minutes and drops you close to the southern zone.

From there we can pick you up, or you rent a car for the last stretch down the coast to Uvita. It’s the easiest way from San Jose airport to Uvita if you land tired, or you just want to be here fast!

Let us arrange your private transfer

If you’d rather not think about any of it, don’t. Send us your flight details and we’ll have a private driver waiting at arrivals in San Jose to bring you door to door, all the way up the mountain road, so you never touch a steering wheel.

A private shuttle between San Jose and Uvita means no rental desk, no map, no guessing at the turnoff.

For a lot of our guests on a honeymoon or an anniversary, that shuttle is the whole appeal. And you land, someone takes your bags, and the next thing you decide is which villa terrace to watch the sunset from.

Where to stop on the drive from San Jose to Uvita

The drive down is half the fun, so build in time to pull over. Coming south on the Costanera, a few favorites on the way to us:

  • Tarcoles River bridge — pull over to watch the crocodiles in the river below.
  • Jaco and Playa Hermosa — the first surf beaches on the coast, good for a leg stretch.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park (near Quepos) — rainforest trails and a well-loved stretch of coast.
  • Dominical — the last surf town before Uvita, worth a coffee stop.
  • Nauyaca Waterfalls — a short detour inland to one of the area’s best-loved waterfalls.
  • Marino Ballena National Park — right by us, home to the Whale’s Tail sandbar.

One of the more useful Costa Rica travel tips for the road: don’t leave anything valuable in the car when you park to explore, the same as you would anywhere.

But a little planning, and the drive stays the easy, scenic part of your trip to Uvita. If you like to get around Costa Rica at your own pace, this is the route that makes it feel effortless.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get to Oxygen Jungle Villas?

Fly into San Jose (SJO), then reach Uvita one of three ways: drive the coast road (about 3.5 to 4 hours), take a 20-minute domestic flight to Quepos and finish by car, or let us arrange a private transfer that brings you door to door. The final climb up to the property is on a short gravel road that needs a 4×4.

How long is the drive from San Jose to Uvita?

Plan on about 3.5 to 4 hours by car, a bit more with stops. You’ll leave San Jose on Route 27, join the Costanera (Route 34) at the coast, and follow it south past Jaco and Quepos into Uvita. The main road is paved and well marked the whole way, so it never feels like a long drive.

Do you need a 4×4 to get to Oxygen Jungle Villas?

For the final climb, yes. The coast highway is fully paved, but the access road up to the property is short, gravel, and steep, so a 4×4 with real ground clearance is the right call. If you’re renting a car in Costa Rica, book the 4 wheel drive ahead, or skip it entirely and let our private transfer handle the whole drive, mountain road included.

Can I fly closer instead of driving from San Jose?

Yes. A short domestic flight from San Jose to Quepos takes about 20 minutes and drops you about an hour from Uvita, and you finish by road along the coast. It’s a great option if you land late or you’d rather not drive on your arrival day. We can collect you in Quepos, or you can arrange a Costa Rica car rental there.

Is it hard for first-time visitors to drive to Uvita?

Not on this route. The Costanera is paved, lightly trafficked, and easy to follow, so the San Jose to Uvita drive is a gentle introduction to driving a car in Costa Rica. The only real requirement is a 4×4 for the short mountain road at the end, and a little daylight for your first arrival.

Where should we stop on the drive to Uvita?

The coast road gives you plenty: the crocodile bridge over the Tarcoles River, the surf beaches at Jaco, Manuel Antonio National Park near Quepos, a coffee stop in Dominical, and Marino Ballena National Park and its Whale’s Tail sandbar as you reach Uvita. Space these beach towns out and the drive becomes part of the trip.

Can you arrange a transfer so we don’t have to drive at all?

Yes, and many guests choose exactly that. Send your flight details and we’ll have a private driver meet you at San Jose arrivals and bring you door to door, up the access road included. A private shuttle is the easiest way for many first-time visitors to Costa Rica to visit Uvita. See the full transfer guide, then send us your dates.
